Post Event | Pi-Top maker sharing conference in Shenzhen
Received warm invitation from iSUN3d, eSUN and RepRap Pro, a special guest visited
Shenzhen Chaihuo Maker Space to share experience of application of 3D print in ideation and
innovation.
This special guest is Mr. Ryan Dunwoody, who is from University of Oxford, the co-founder
of Pi-top. Maybe you are not familiar enough with Ryan, but I bet you must hear about
Raspberry Pi which is a credit card size laptop, however, it has completed function that a
normal computer should has.
Raspberry Pi installs Raspbian system, which based on Linux Operation System, the original
intention is helping people to learn programming, so that it has customized their system and
programming application. As a result, the Raspberry Pi became very popular all around world.
Recently, this team apply the special features of Raspberry Pi and develop an amazing 3D
print laptop, Pi-Top, it combines the advantages of Raspberry Pi and idea of Laptop, this set
contains, all of the material needed to print a laptop and a completed user guide, which is able
to help users to print their own Pi-Top without problems. All of the mentioned features make
Pi-Top become the first 3D print laptop in the history.
In this event, Team Pi-Top brought edge industry dynamics in 3D print to Shenzhen and
share with local makers. Mr. Ryan Dunwoody has given interesting presentation with topic
about the Pi-top and 3D print to Shenzhen makers, in the meanwhile, the makers in Xi’an
have also participated this event by video. The presentation explains the original intention
of creating Pi-Top and the application in the daily life.
“The purpose of Pi-Top is help users to be creative and make their own laptop, this Pi-Top
is just a beginning, users can use it to practice and learn how to build their own work. The
core part is combining 3D print and PCB technologies. In the end users can build their own
electronics in the same way that we build Pi-top, if they handle both technologies of course. “
At the end of the event, team Pi-Top answers questions from makers. Let’s have a look at
the photos for the event.
Pi-Top Co-Founder & CTO

the mechanical side and the production of the laptop as a whole. His degree at Oxford
University was a general engineering degree, giving him a range of engineering knowledge
and skills. For his 4th year engineering project, he built a solar powered, super capacitor
based Raspberry Pi laptop and received a prize for best project, awarded by the Oxford
Engineering Department. Ryan then joined with Co-founder Jesse to create Pi-Top and
has not stopped doing it since!
Ryan’s entrepreneurial passion began at the age of 14 when he started a firewood
