Stringing
Cause 1: Moisture in the filament
Solution: Moist filaments generate steam when heated, disrupting flow and causing stringing.
- Dry the filament before printing, especially hygroscopic ones like PA and TPU. Use a dry box during printing.
- Lower the nozzle temperature to reduce vaporization and improve stringing issues.
Cause 2: Insufficient Retraction
Solution: Heated material at the nozzle flows easily, so retraction is needed to pull it back and prevent oozing. If retraction is insufficient, the filament won’t retract completely and will ooze out, causing stringing.
Cause 2: Excessive temperature
Solution: The higher the temperature, the lower the viscosity, and the greater the flow. Overheating makes the filament more prone to oozing and stringing. Lower the nozzle temperature during printing.
Note: For foaming materials, heating at the nozzle causes expansion, making retraction ineffective. To minimize stringing, reduce travel moves instead.
